Recreation

The Recreation category focuses on providing ways for Norton County to stay active and involved with various types of activities. 

Identified Goals:

  • Expand and enhance recreation opportunities

  • Enhance community recreation center and their programs for all age groups

  • Create walking, biking and hiking trails

  • Form a recreation facility for Almena for the school and community

  • Construct an indoor pool

  • Establish new ballpark facilities

  • Build a dog park and increase dog friendly areas in Norton County

 

Grants Given Totaling $291,679.83:

  • Norton County 4-H Council received a grant in 2015 to continue the Walking School Bus program for Eisenhower Elementary School students. 

  • Friends of Prairie Dog State Park received a grant in 2015 to construct a multi-use basketball court for various outdoor park programs and activities. 

  • Norton County Horse Council Association received a grant in 2015 to construct an announcers stand at the Norton County Equine Facility. 

  • Norton County 4-H Council received a grant in 2015 to sponsor the Norton BB Gun Team in their 2016 season.

  • Norton County Horse Council Association participated in the 2017 Norton County Community Foundation Match Day to support ongoing programs.

  • Secure Sebelius Lake received a grant in 2017, 2018 and 2019 to fulfil their contractual obligations with the Almena Irrigation District and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism to ensure consistently high lake levels at the Keith Sebelius Reservoir. 

  • Norton Eagles participated in the 2017 Norton County Community Foundation Match Day to support ongoing programs.

  • Lenora PRIDE received a grant in 2018 to purchase updated exercise equipment for members of the community to use. 

  • Norton County 4-H Council received a grant in 2019 to provide adequate trap shooting facilities at the Norton Shooting Range to support and encourage the Norton County 4-H Youth Clay Target Shooting Club.

  • Norton American Legion Baseball received a grant in 2019 to provide support for ongoing organizational programs.
